Who’s information is it?

Who owns your emails?  Who owns information you store in the cloud?

“Microsoft Sues Justice Department Over Secret Customer Data Searches,” The Wall Street Journal, April 15, 2016, A1. The dispute is over whether Microsoft can tell you when the government demands that Microsoft turns over your data stored with Microsoft.  Lots of courts issue lots of orders – some unlimited by time – forbidding Microsoft from telling you the government has accessed “your” data.

I guess the terms of use describe Microsoft’s rights and obligations. And I can understand the government wants to avoid letting you know.  But isn’t it your property?

Maybe not.
