Are there other businesses that can use the access to more detailed information about their consumers’ consumption to differentiate rates? How is this different than your internet carrier charging more for consumers who use more band width? Or charging a lower road tax to drivers who don’t drive more than 5,000 miles a year?  When does the information gathering become overly intrusive?

Historical note:  The smart meters that do this measuring were being developed in the 1980’s. I was with a meter manufacturer at the time.
